Halal Certification

Home – Halal Certification

Halal certification is part of Indonesia’s national Halal Product Assurance framework, established under Law No. 33 of 2014 and further implemented through Government Regulation No. 42 of 2024. The Halal Product Assurance Organizing Agency (BPJPH) administers the framework. In practical terms, halal assurance concerns whether a product and its relevant materials and production processes meet the applicable halal requirements.

The obligation is phased by product category and applicable rules. BPJPH has communicated that the next phase, including categories such as cosmetics, certain medicines, chemical products and goods used by the public, is scheduled around 17 October 2026. Businesses should not assume that every item faces an identical requirement or deadline: confirm the product’s legal classification, relevant HS code where applicable, and any exemptions or special rules with BPJPH or a qualified Indonesian regulatory adviser.

For manufacturers, halal readiness is not simply a label exercise. It may involve mapping ingredients and suppliers, retaining supporting evidence, documenting production controls, and ensuring that any changes to formulations, sources or processes are assessed under the applicable system. Foreign halal certificates may require recognition or registration procedures before they can be relied on in Indonesia.
