SNI
Home – SNI
SNI stands for (Standar Nasional Indonesia), or Indonesian National Standard. SNI standards are established by Badan Standardisasi Nasional (BSN), Indonesia’s national standardization body. In the product context, SNI certification provides formal third-party evidence that a product conforms to the requirements of a particular standard. It is therefore different from PKRT marketing authorization: SNI concerns conformity with a specified standard, while PKRT authorization concerns permission to distribute an eligible household health product.
SNI application is generally voluntary. However, the relevant ministry or government authority can make a particular SNI mandatory through a technical regulation. Where this happens, products within the regulation’s scope must satisfy the prescribed requirements. Mandatory SNI requirements can apply to both domestically manufactured and imported products sold in Indonesia. BSN establishes standards, but the decision to make a standard mandatory rests with the relevant regulatory authority.
For manufacturers, the first step is therefore to determine not only whether an SNI exists, but whether it is mandatory for the specific product. The applicable standard, its version, the technical regulation and the required conformity-assessment route should be checked together. Product certification normally involves an appropriate product certification body, known as a Lembaga Sertifikasi Produk (LSPro), with testing and other assessment activities determined by the applicable certification scheme.
Businesses should not treat the SNI mark as a general claim that a product is “government approved.” It indicates conformity within the scope of the relevant standard and certification arrangements. Likewise, an SNI certificate should not be treated as a replacement for a separately applicable PKRT marketing authorization; the two instruments serve different regulatory purposes.
